“New York Bridge Hit Three Times in Less Than 24 Hours”
A bridge in New York state, notorious for being struck by vehicles too tall to pass under, was hit three more times this week, according to The Post Standard. Despite clear signage indicating a clearance of 12 feet 2 inches, the Park Street Bridge in Syracuse continues to be a frequent target for oversized trucks.
Multiple Incidents in Less Than 24 Hours
Police reports reveal that the bridge was hit by three trucks within a 24-hour period. On Monday morning, a garbage truck and a tractor-trailer struck the bridge within two hours of each other. Later that same day, around 2:20 PM, another tractor-trailer collided with the same overpass.
All three drivers received tickets, and the collisions caused significant damage to the trailers of the two larger trucks. The dump truck, however, was able to pull over and continue driving after the impact.
The Most Struck Bridge in New York State
While the Park Street Bridge has faced repeated collisions, it is not the most frequently struck bridge in New York State. The King Street Bridge, located on the border of Rye Brook, NY, and Greenwich, CT, holds that dubious distinction. According to the Greenwich Times, the King Street Bridge has been hit nearly 150 times in the past decade alone.
In response to these frequent incidents, additional warnings and signage have been installed on the King Street Bridge and along I-287 to deter trucks from entering the Hutchinson Parkway. Despite these efforts, data from the state Department of Transportation and the Thruway Authority indicate that vehicles struck bridges in New York at least 344 times in 2021.
