Precautions Against Mosquito-Borne Diseases
Governor Hochul is urging New Yorkers to be vigilant in preventing mosquito bites to safeguard against diseases such as West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. “We want people to get outside and enjoy the beauty that is New York State, but we want them to do so safely with their health in mind,” Hochul said. She emphasized that “prevention remains the most effective method of protection” and suggested simple measures like wearing protective clothing and applying mosquito repellent.
Mosquitoes: The World’s Deadliest Animal
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classifies mosquitoes as the “world’s deadliest” creatures due to their role in spreading various diseases. The CDC notes that mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting deadly illnesses including malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, yellow fever, Zika, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis. According to the CDC, mosquitoes are responsible for more human deaths than any other animal.

In 2017, nearly half a million people died from malaria, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Additionally, the number of severe cases of West Nile Virus increased by 25 percent in 2018 compared to the years 2008-2017. New York State reported the highest number of West Nile Virus cases in the nation in 2022, highlighting the critical need for effective prevention measures.
